Sucks To Be A Vick!

The Atlanta Falcons have released Michael Vick this morning, the team confirmed on its website.

"The Atlanta Falcons today relinquished their contractual rights to quarterback Michael Vick," Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff said in a statement. "Michael remains suspended by the NFL. However, in the event NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell decides to reinstate Michael, we feel his best opportunity to re-engage his football career would be at another club."

Dimitroff added that: "Our entire organization sincerely hopes that Michael will continue to focus his efforts on making positive changes in his life, and we wish him well in that regard."

The Falcons had hoped to trade rights to Vick, but Dimitroff said there was little interest.

"We spent a significant amount of time this off-season trying to trade him to another NFL club, and we had some conversations with a few teams, but nothing materialized," the GM said. "At this point, we feel releasing Michael is best for him and best for us. Our entire organization sincerely hopes that Michael will continue to focus his efforts on making positive changes in his life, and we wish him well in that regard."

Meantime, the Virginian-Pilot is reporting that Vick's brother, Marcus, may face jail time  because of allegations he violated conditions of his drunken-driving sentence.

A hearing is scheduled in Virginia for Aug. 5 on whether to revoke Marcus Vick's suspended sentence. He is accused of not complying with provisions of an alcohol safety and awareness program.

A judge suspended a one-year jail sentence, and levied a fine of $530 against the younger Vick, who was released by the Miami Dolphins in 2007.
